Network Plus Shifting Global Polarities
2026 Training Event: Researching Authoritarian Contexts
Research Center for Global Risk, Nagasaki University, 26-29 October 2026
We are inviting applications from Post-Graduate Research students and early-career researchers
to participate in the 2026 Polarities Network Plus Training Event, “Researching Authoritarian
Contexts”, which will be held at Nagasaki University in autumn 2026.
Participants will engage with postgraduate researchers from across the Polarities Network Plus
universities (Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, and Oxford). They will also interact with
researchers and scholars from Nagasaki University and Hokkaido University’s Slavic-Eurasia
Research Center in a training event devoted to upskilling, knowledge transfer, policy
engagement, and professional development. In addition, there will be opportunities to receive
direct feedback on pre-submitted drafts of journal articles or chapters of doctoral projects.
Preference will be given to applicants pursuing doctoral studies in Eastern European and
Eurasian Studies who have an interest in the Workshop Theme, Researching Authoritarian
Contexts, and who can demonstrate how their research intersects with one or more of the
Network’s core themes: Orders, Interactions, Anxieties, and Implications. Reflecting
Nagasaki’s position as a centre of cross-border interaction, engagement, and cooperation
between the Republic of Korea and Japan, applicants are invited from eligible scholars based
in these two countries whose academic interests demonstrate a strong connection to the
Polarity themes (see the Polarities website for more details on these themes).
Application process
Applicants must be undertaking doctoral research or be post-doctoral researchers at a Graduate
School in Japan or the Republic of Korea. Approximately three to four applicants will be
selected and invited to participate in the training event.
You should submit:
• two-page (max.) CV including educational background and key academic
achievements
• one-page (max.) cover letter that details how your doctoral work relates to the themes
outlined above and how connecting with international researchers from the Network
will be of benefit to your research
Applications should be sent in English to Yesbol Sartayev: yesbol.s@nagasaki-u.ac.jp by
Sunday 26 July 2026 (10 pm JST). Selected applicants should be notified in early August
2026. For successful applicants, reasonable travel expenses to Nagasaki, at least one evening
meal, and four nights of accommodation in Nagasaki will be covered.
